January 10th review

Today's Toastmaster of the day was Dave, who was the hot seat Toastmaster. He was also the second speaker of the day. Paul was the general evaluator who found it funny when Dave was introducing himself, but said he needed to say the next speaker is Dave. As general evaluator, he complimented Marisa on uplifting hot spot table topics. He talked about how they were appropriate for the new year and brought out some really great news from several members in the audience. Anajanette was also complemented twice, once by Laimons and once by Paul, for her wonderful evaluation of Christa.
Christa was our first speaker of the day, giving her vocal variety speech, or speech six. She talked about how she moved from Alaska during a storm in the winter. This was a white out storm where it was so cold that the hair in her nose froze. While traveling, they had two flat tires, one on their U-Hal and the other on their car. During the speech, she also talked about how her back window shattered, and she was trying to convey that she needed plastic to cover the window to the locals, who did not understand what she needed. Anajanette was her speech evaluator for her sixth speech. She told us that Christa was working on her rate of speaking, pauses and word choice. In the evaluation, Anajanette said that she very much enjoyed Christa's use of word pictures, such as how she "mooned the wolves" when her back window broke and her husband and her had to strip down to get rid of the glass. One thing she did not like as much was the pictures because she felt it distracted from the word pictures.
Dave was the second speaker, who gave a run through of the speech he will give to 7th and 8th graders tomorrow. The speech he gave was about a man that looked for the most powerful master to serve, and so he found the most powerful king in the land. The king was afraid of Satan, who was rumored to have entered his land, tempting the man to leave to serve Satan. After serving Satan, he found that Satan was afraid of God, who he then chose to serve. Laimons was Dave's evaluator, who talked about the build up of his story helping to draw in the audience. One thing he did suggest is to make his gestures a bit more open.
Marisa was in charge of Table topics, who asked what our new year's resolution was since most people were not so happy with 2016. Dave was the first one to answer the question announcing his engagement to an old friend, and he will be going to Arizona soon to see her again. Lee also talked about how he is officially retired and plans to enjoy that this year,  by working on projects at home, and taking time to do what he wants. Peter talked about learning how to understand his cats this year, as well as enjoying retirement like Lee. Lauralee said that 2017 will be more of school, since this year she will finish her associates at OCCC, and go to OSU next year. Marriage and retirement tied for table topics today. Both Lee and Dave won the table topics award.
The word of the day is beguile, meaning to say something false or to tell a story. Lauralee was the timer of the day.
Have a good day

New Years Resolutions

With this new year, a lot of people are thinking about ways to improve this year. Here is how Toastmasters can help you with your journey this year.

If you want to work on your communication this year, we have several ways to help you. Through our communication program, you can work on spontaneous communication skills, interpersonal skills and public speaking skills. We do Table Topics every Tuesday after listening to speeches, which allows our members to improve their skills on impromptu speaking. At Newport Toastmaster, we understand this can be very scary and uncomfortable, so we try to make this section fun and engaging. We do not judge you, especially for nervousness, and we rejoice in improvement made. Giving speeches can also be nerve wracking, but in our evaluation we always make sure to highlight what we liked best with our tips to help you improve.

Leadership is also a set of skills we work on at Newport Toastmaster. From staying on a schedule, to giving an evaluation, our meetings are perfect to help you work on various leadership skills. Toastmasters leadership track works on a variety of skills to help you grow, including the mentoring project, time management project, and listening skills. As a speech evaluator, one of our meeting roles, you can work on giving feedback and critiquing someone's work. If you are the Toastmaster, you learn to run a meeting on a schedule and how to improvise if there is a problem, or someone is missing. Lastly, if you become an officer, you will gain experience in helping run a club, as well as flexibility, teamwork, and motivation.

What are your goals?
